Imagine you’re driving down the highway in the slow lane going the speed limit and someone cuts you off trying to get to the exit and honks and flips you the bird screaming something about you driving too slow as they almost clip the front of your car. What’s your first thought and feeling?
Over the next hour, I was present only as movement and bliss. My mind barely spoke to me and while I exerted my body impossibly, I felt utterly ecstatic. In this unencumbered state I ran almost to the third way station before finding someone abandoned and struggling with blisters. They leaned on my shoulder and together we tripled their pace to the bottom crossing the finish line using me as a new leg.
I had been back from my 2007 trip to Naitauba for about a year when Deb told me she wanted a divorce. While there were many signs, I was totally blindsided. The idea that she might leave never really occurred to me. I was remarkably obtuse.
The body-mind doesn’t generally need to focus on the objects of the world around it any more than a mind needs to think compulsively. When there’s a good reason to use the mind to think, that’s when thinking should occur. When I was three years old, my little brother, Mark, who was a bit over a year and a half at the time, was killed by a dump truck that was parked in front of the motel room next to our motel room. The driver pulled up some time earlier, parked and entered next door. Then he came back out, jumped in his truck and began driving.
The world of things is like an echo in consciousness. There is always the mere unmodified conscious current that registers, and then the body-mind converts the patterns of energy into the objects that it experiences as itself and the world, and this too registers in consciousness. My body-mind thinks it is a someone but “I am” only an echo of self-contraction.
There are times when the motive to move my attention in any direction whatsoever is so weak that I find myself sitting still while waves of love-bliss crash down through me. The madness and stubbornness of my pattern is that a motive forms at all and off I go, leaving Grace in the background…
All I recall is that at some point I suddenly realized that the light entering my eye while meditating on Adi Da was so intensely bright and all the details of the entire room became so washed out in that light that it felt almost like I was staring into a light source. It was emanating from Him.
